The Most Texan Photo Shoot Ever

I took a little vacation last weekend to spend some quality time with my family. During my brief visit, I photographed one of the most Texan events ever, the Williamson’s County Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo in Jarrell, Texas.

It’s been a long time since I’ve photographed a rodeo, and it was just as much fun as I remembered. I love smaller, outdoor rodeos. You can get closer to the athletes, animals, and action. The patriotism and community connection are always strong. And you cannot beat the antics of “Mutton Busting” or “Saddle a Steer.”

Just watching the Rodeo Sweetheart, B.B. Thomsen, gallop around the arena on her speedy steed “Spiderman” as her accolades (she’s a recent high school honors graduate who has completed dual credit veterinary college classes) were announced was inspiring. Then you have the presentation of the colors and branches of service flags on horseback and procession of the riderless horse, a symbol of those lost in service. Such presentations are sure to stir up your emotions.

Bronc busting, calf roping, barrel racing, and bull riding were all there. But the entertainment wasn’t just provided by the cowboys and cowgirls. Legendary rodeo clown Leon Coffee kept the crowds laughing and amazed with his own automotive pyrotechnical display.

So if you’ve ever thought about checking out a rodeo, do so! They are family-friendly events and a wonderful example of the endangered American cowboy culture. But the main reason to go is rodeos are just fun.
